Lop Rabbits as Pets

Sandy Crook's book , Lop Rabbits as Pets, is a wonderful book devoted solely to the interests of lop rabbit owners, but any rabbit owner will appreciate the information provided on rabbit care and housing, as well as the many beautiful pictures that are displayed throughout the book.
One part of the book that I especially commend Sandy Crook on is her focus on lop rabbits (and I assume rabbits in general), as Pet Therapy pets. That is a wonderful idea, and more books should focus on that.

The lop rabbit breed descriptions are given along with the brief histories of the breeds, and as I mentioned, the pictures are just wonderful.

This book is a must for any and all lop eared rabbit enthusiasts, and most rabbit owners will appreciate the care tips and other information provided.--CorgiBuddy@aol.com  Shop here

The Bunny Lover's Complete Guide To House Rabbits: The Ultimate Handbook for Successfully Living Indoors with a Pet Rabbit

If rabbits could write a book to tell us how to care for them, this would be the book they'd write. This book is so full of facts that every bunny parent should know, as well as tons of pictures. All of the descriptions have pictures with them to completely detail the point. This is a must-have for any rabbit parent, both novice and experienced. The author's perspective and keen sense and understanding of what his own rabbits' behaviors mean is excellent. I had my first house rabbit 24 years ago, and still, I learned so much from this book. I did not intend to read it cover-to-cover, but I could not put the book down. This is a great book for reading cover-to-cover, as well as a reference book complete with an index. This books gets 2 paws up (and 5 stars).--S Elderkin  Shop here

The Field Guide to Rabbits

"The Field Guide to Rabbits" is by no means a comprehensive book on rabbits - what it does do well is profiling the various breeds with full-color pictures that are representative of each breed. The book is divided into chapters that deal with "Bunny Basics", i.e. fur varieties, shapes and sizes, a chapter that focuses on coloring, bunny behavior which is deficient in my opinion as it is not comprehensive, and tips for professionally showing bunnies, as well as a comprehensive chapter on breed profiles. If you're a beginner rabbit owner who is looking for tips on how to handle and care for your bunny, you are better off looking up resources on the internet or other guides. But, if you'd like to see all the different breeds of bunnies then this is quite a nice guide with color pictures of various breeds, displayed in all their furry cuteness!--z hayes

Stories Rabbits Tell: A Natural and Cultural History of a Misunderstood Creature

The rabbit has been domesticated for roughly 1,500 years, but until fairly recently they were not kept as house pets; the traditional pet rabbit was caged in a hutch outdoors. The rise of "house rabbits" that live uncaged indoors and the dearth of books written about rabbit behavior led Davis and DeMello to create a book that explores the roots and nuances of rabbit behavior to increase our understanding and appreciation of the species. Whether exploring our schizophrenic approach to rabbits (Are they pets, pests, or a profitable farm animal?), portraying the complex lives of wild rabbits and the corresponding behaviors of their tame brethren, discussing the roles rabbits have played in folklore and religion, or describing the commercial uses for rabbits, the authors reveal a fascinating depth of information. Enlivened by a broad range of quotations from such sources as poets, scientists, and animal-rights activists; illustrated with period and modern photographs; and heavily footnoted, this is currently the best book to offer readers who want to know more about their pet rabbits. When Your Rabbit Needs Special Care: Traditional and Alternative Healing Methods

Full of helpful information for rabbit owners whose pets are ill, injured, or in need of extra help, Moore (A House Rabbit Primer) and Smith's (Rabbit Health in the 21st Century) guide is unique for two reasons: it is entirely devoted to the care of animals with special needs, and it includes alternative therapies and healing methods such as acupuncture, chiropractic, healing through touch, and interspecies communication. The authors have consulted with several veterinarians to ensure the information on traditional care is accurate, although they acknowledge that there may be differences of opinion among veterinarians about the best care for various ailments. Appendixes include a table of medications and appropriate doses, a list of rabbit vital signs, and lists of both traditional and alternative care resources for pet owners. The book may have a fairly limited audience as not all rabbit owners will be willing and able to devote the time and effort necessary to care for a special-needs rabbit. For owners who do, this should be required reading. Recommended where interest warrants.—Deborah Emerson, Rochester Regional Lib. Council, Fairport, NY Buy it now

House Rabbit Handbook: How to Live With an Urban Rabbit

THE HOUSE RABBIT HANDBOOK is an essential guide for anyone who has a rabbit as a house pet. The book contains information regarding rabbit behavior in a home that is very accurate; at least it seems accurate when I look at the behavior of my two rabbits. The author believes that rabbits can have just as much personality as a dog or a cat and assumes that people who keep rabbits as pets wish to interact with them. So if your goal is to keep a rabbit in a cage in the backyard, this book will not be all that helpful. If on the other hand you want a unique pet that is curious, capable of being entertaining, a bit on the mischievous side, and yes, even loving, this book will he of great help.

The book contains all the basic information about rabbit care in a home setting. Care, feeding, grooming, attending to health needs, and the like are covered. There are also suggestions about rabbit-proofing a home and the pros and cons of allowing rabbits to roam freely around the house.

For me, the most helpful section of the book dealt with introducing a new rabbit my first rabbit. I assumed that since he was so friendly, a new friend would be perfect. I was wrong. He was a terror and wanted nothing to do with his new playmate. Now one is lost without the other. The suggestions of this book really worked.

While the information in the book is based on sound veterinary advice, the reader quickly realizes that the author relies heavily on personal experience as well. The techniques she espouses flow from her experience. Ideally, people will want to read this book prior to getting a rabbit, especially since it contains valuable information about preparing for the rabbit to come home. However, if you, like me find yourself in a crisis situation with a rabbit and need to find a book with answers, this book will be a godsend.

Just one piece of advice. Don't leave the book on the floor by mistake. I am noticing a few little nibbles on the binding. Though I am a voracious reader, I do not think that the nibbles are the way I devour my books. Buy it now
